The 2012 Northwest Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championships took place Sept. 30 – Oct. 4, 2011 in Spokane, Washington. The Regional Championships determine eligibility for the 2012 Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships (Novice, Junior and Senior singles events) and the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships (Juvenile and Intermediate singles events). Shayna Moellenberg, Joyce Chan and Isabella Bourret represented the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club accompanied by SVFSC coaches Lisa-Marie Allen and Sonya Dunfield.

Shayna Moellenberg, a Community School eleventh grader who won the 2011 Regional Championships at the Junior Ladies level last year, moved into Senior Ladies, the highest competitive level, this year. Moellenberg finished second in both her Free Skate and her Short program, capturing extra points from the judges with her awe-inspiring layback spin.   Moellenberg will compete at the Sectional Championships in Salt Lake City November 15  through November 19 as the reigning Senior Ladies NWP Regional Silver Medalist.  This will be the third consecutive year Moellenberg has represented the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club at the Sectional Championships. Moellenberg’s primary coach is Lisa-Marie Allen. Her choreographer is Gia Guddat.

Joyce Chan and Isabella Bourret faced the two largest, most competitive groups of the competition. Competing in Intermediate Ladies, Chan took eighth, a strong finish which placed her in the top half of a qualifying round consisting of 18 Intermediate Ladies free skaters. This was Chan’s first trip to the NWP Regional Championships.  Competing against the region’s top Juvenile Girls free skaters, Bourret finished fifteenth in her qualifying round. This was Bourret’s first time competing at qualifying levels. Chan is a Freshman, and Bourret a sixth grader, at the Community School.

2012 Northwest Pacific Regional Open

The Lilac City Figure Skating Club hosted the 2012 Northwest Pacific Regional Open Non Qualifying Competition simultaneously with the Regional Championships.   Local SVFSC skaters Travis Flynt, Katie Peters, and Sheldon Gentling traveled to Spokane to compete. Peters successfully faced one of the larger competitive groups in the non-qualifying competition and emerged victorious, winning Gold in Pre- Preliminary Girls Without Axel, Group D.  Flynt took Bronze competing in Pre-Juvenile Boys, the highest non-qualifying competitive level of the three SVFSC skaters at the NWP Regional Open.  Peters is a sixth grader, and Flynt a seventh grader, at Community School Middle School.  Gentling, a Community School third grader, competed in Pre-Preliminary Girls Without Axel, Group A, finishing sixth. This was Gentling’s first trip to a regional competition. Peters, Flynt and Gentling were accompanied to competition by coach Darlin Baker.
